Section 2: First Impressions
HE SAID
When I moved to Salt Lake almost a year and a half ago, my second Sunday going to church a girl in my ward named Sarah came up to me after church and introduced herself and invited me to a barbecue that next Wednesday at her house. Seeing as how I didn’t know anyone and wanted to make some new friends I graciously accepted the invitation. It was at this barbecue that Alexis and I first met. I thought she was nice and pretty, but beyond that I didn’t think much of it. I was dating someone at the time as was Alexis. I became good friends with Sarah and as a result became friends with Alexis. There were a few occasions that I had the opportunity to hang out with Alexis at different activities and things but the feeling was always the same. She was a really nice person. I was grateful that she was my friend but that was all it was, a friendship.
Then, one early morning a few months before we started dating, I saw her at the gym with Sarah. I was friends with Sarah and had tried calling her several times in recent weeks but she never returned any of my calls, so I went to go talk to her. Alexis said hello and asked how I was and we talked for a brief minute before they had to leave. It was then that something changed. I always thought Alexis was very pretty and very nice and fun to hang out with, but suddenly I thought I should ask her out. I wasn’t about to at that moment, but we were no longer in the same ward so I rarely saw her. I just let the thought pass. A month or so later, I saw her again, this time at the grocery store. We said hello and talked for a minute. I tried subtly (I failed in this effort of subtlety) asking her if she was seeing anyone. She said she was and we said good bye and I felt that perhaps I missed my opportunity. I saw her again later at a gathering of friends, but knowing that she was dating someone I didn’t think much of my feeling of asking her out.
SHE SAID
Well, I am convinced that I first met Christopher at a “family” dinner with Sarah Schneider and “Grandpa” Phillip Thomas BUT apparently I first met Christopher at a barbeque at Sarah’s instead. I remember him at that party. I was currently dating another “winner”, John, and he was there also. I honestly didn’t think anything about Chris until the family dinner that, apparently, happened after the party. At the party I thought Chris was nice but nothing else, I was dating someone. But then one night, Sarah had me over for a dinner with Grandpa Phil and this guy Chris. I remember her telling me that he was coming but I couldn’t think of who he was. Then when I saw him I remembered who he was. He was nice. I didn’t really think anything besides the fact that he was a nice guy, oh and that I probably wouldn’t date him. He did remind me a little of my brother mike but only in mannerisms. I thought we would be friends. He was in my ward and so I saw him at activities and we would chit-chat but nothing big. Then he disappeared, he started attending a different ward, and I would see him occasionally around town.
